Following the acts of vigilante groups across the US-Mexico border against cartel drug traffickers, and gang violence amongst civilians, Cartel Land is a shocking documentary to have captured all these real-life events up close in the most cinematic way possible.
While the synopsis mentions the documentary to be following two vigilante groups on either side of the border - the Arizona Border Recon on the American side, and the Autodefensas on the Mexican side in the state of Michoacán, which it depicts initially flipping between both sides, but on progressing through the documentary, it becomes quite clear that the story of the Autodefensas and their leader, Dr. Mireles become the spotlight of the film, leaving the story of the Arizona Border Recon to solely doing “checks” along the American border.
Nevertheless, one of the best documentaries to have come out of 2015.
