Director Wim WendersThe film is Wender's attempt at a suspenseful thriller. He makes some things good, but others suffer. It didn't feel like the work of a seasoned filmmaker at all.The film explores the characters' psyches, which adds a nice touch but also provides more information than necessary. It also makes the connection it has to thriller dubious if not superficial leading my expectations to be squandered. I had the wrong expectations from this as it's nothing but a quirky drama with comedy at times. The focus on mentally unstable people was nice but at the same time the budding romance angle didn't work for me as again, I wanted a thriller and not whatever convoluted piss-poor nonsense this was of an excuse for a film. The plot is half-baked at times. For some reason, the dialogues were of poor quality. The film also becomes too self-indulgent at times. The acting was also quite poor even though the cast held promise. The shots were interesting, sometimes good, sometimes bad. It also has a fair bit of loose ends left untied. On the backbone of mental disorders, Wender has left them unanswered. After a point even the murder that took place made me lose interest in the reveal of the killer. It fails as both a mainstream as well as arthouse work. The way mental disorders like DID, schizophrenia, etc. as well as drug addiction was dealt with is interesting. The way they showed how people profit from the dead like selling his artworks previously considered shitty. The paintings weren't even his but stolen and hiding other artworks beneath them. It acts as a way to show us how our gaze covers actual good things with a veil so people can only behold poorly made things.Overall a disappointing watch this was.
