The Black Cat, set in 1840 Philadelphia, has the great writer Edgar Allan Poe, struggling with alcoholism, writers block, as well as being out of ideas, short on cash, and tormented by his wife Virginia's black cat that will either destroy his life or inspire him to write one of his most famous stories.

This annoyed me, of course, on my first go around but having since been more acquainted with Poe’s biography, this is much more enjoyable. Poe, it turns out, was an archetypal American: a catty, drunken asshole who met a moment with the full force of his talent and then made everyone around him miserable and died. Anyways, what if we tortured him in his own fictions Grand Guignol style?
Is every iteration/adaptation of this good? Possibly. Will investigate.
Don’t we all miss Stuart Gordon? Sick fuck extraordinaire. One of the true heroes of horror cinema.
In another random coincidence, this is animal hanging number two of the evening.

One of the episodes I was looking forward to the most, but unfortunately a disappointment.
Jeffrey Combs is great and there is an excellent Axe in the Head effect and the film’s got some interesting approaches and good moments. But mostly I didn’t really enjoy it. It’s not badly made, but I really disliked the color grading.
After three films, maybe I’m just not the biggest fan of Stuart Gordon. Still very much looking forward to “From Beyond”.
