Maybe it’s because I just watched like 10 Japanese monster movies where the production value is so bad, it makes these apes look real by comparison, but I didn’t hate this. It not GOOD at all, but it is one of the only Kong movies to stray from the formula and have a little fun with the character.
It actually has a very similar vibe to a lot of Kaiju films, particularly War of the Gargantuas which features two monster being chased by the military across the countryside. It also does away with most of the problematic element featured in the previous 77 film, though with a tremendous step down in the male lead. That’s okay though, cause we get a huge upgrade in the female lead with Linda Hamilton.
The movie is goofy, weird, and at times overly graphic. Kong holds a guy up to the camera and snaps him in half. Still, it’s not the horrendous mess that it’s reputation led me to expect. Do you have any idea who hard it is to even find this movie? The only reason I didn’t watch it back when I watched the other Kong’s is because it didn’t appear on the list of movies about Kong. It does NOT exist.
