Don Quixote is kinda mid

I HAVE NOW WATCHED EVERY SINGLE PIECE OF MEDIA EVER DIRECTED BY ORSON WELLES, FINISHED OR UNFINISHED (with the exception, that is, of the three film reels you are unable to see unless you are writing for a planned publication in the Munich Film Museum - The Deep, Moby Dick, and An Evening With Orson Welles: The Golden Honeymoon. I will make it there one day, I swear it.)

In fact, I have, almost accidentally, seen most of his work at least twice by now, just for my own pleasure, so I do feel pretty confident in my judgement of them. Don Quixote is actually not the last one I watched, but it is by far the strangest, and one I had to put off talking about for the longest time. Actually, there is so much to talk about that I decided it was too much, and to sacrifice talking about it at all for the sake of my final Welles ranking.

I am of the persuasion that everything from Filming Othello up is a masterpiece that floors me in some way (and that Ambersons seemingly would be, bearing in mind the obvious) and that's half the list, so it does say something.

Come tentativo di assemblare un film nella sua interezza è pressoché indifendibile: fa acqua da tutte le parti il ritmo, è confusionario e, per forza di cose, manca di una reale direzione perché ricostruita a posteriori sul materiale disponibile.

D'altra parte ci ricorda per l'ennesima volta di che razza di forza della natura fosse Orson Welles: capace di tirare fuori del genio visionario con a disposizione due lire e belle speranze. Don Quixote funziona non come storia ma come affresco; come frammentaria celebrazione di una terra, di un talento unico nella sua arte, e anche, in maniera più o meno volontaria, del Cinema tutto
