Much has been said about Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy as a duo (on and off the screen). I guess my unpopular opinion is that I don’t feel like most of their films together, Without Love included, are the best use of Kate’s talents. It always seems like she’s compressing her larger-than-life persona for him.
I spent too much of this movie wishing they’d instead cast Cary Grant, who unfailingly matched the brilliance and zaniness she brought to these kinds of stories. Maybe that’s not a very fair criticism, but it’s how I feel.
I did find the story unique and charming, though, and the scene where Tracy plays “Clair de Lune” was beautiful and atmospheric in a way that stole the whole film.
And I’m always happy to see pre-Lucy Lucille Ball and reflect on just how hard MGM dropped the ball with her. She lights up the screen in her supporting role.
