Damn, what a good movie.
Free from the Hayes Code, Panique depicts a much darker story of a murder and an accusation, where there's implied premarital sex, a pretty negative worldview, and you're not sure who will get caught.
I'd only seen Michel Simon in L'Atalante, where he plays a very animated antagonist, however I was really impressed by his range in this film, playing a much more subtle and misunderstood protagonist. This movie continually subverts your expectations on him as a character, as he becomes more likable despite his flaws.
The direction is super out there, being both intense and chaotic. I look forward to digging more into Julien Duvivier.
This movie was not at all on my radar, but I highly recommend you check it out!
