stunning. one of the most beautifully shot films i’ve ever scene. some of the tracking shots here were astounding. i couldn’t believe this was made in 1964. The Betty scene in the club was incredible. this oddly reminded me of Mulholland Drive. the sound in this was also incredible. I was locked in the whole time

my only minor critique was there are 3 unrelated stories and though they each show various ways Cuba is affected by imperialism, I didn’t see a progression in plot across them.

Soy Cuba feels like a visual poem. I was completely in awe. Emotional, powerful, and deeply tied to the spirit of the Cuban Revolution. Kalatozov constructs four stories about the gestation of the Cuban revolution from exquisite sequence shots, low angle shots and overhead shots that illuminate the screen with that dazzling Caribbean light, creating frames that are a pleasure for the senses.
The camera takes us on a flight through various Cuban landscapes. We meet a beautiful prostitute from the uprooted suburbs, who works in a nightclub, a widowed farmer who plants sugar cane (great happy memories with his wife, through blurred images) who works helped by his son and daughter, whose lands are sold by the landowner to an American company, we also see the young clandestine revolutionaries in the city, sabotaging drive-ins, confronting the forces of order and dying for the cause and finally we find ourselves in the Sierra Maestra where a peasant who earns life with his His wife and three young children join the rebels after losing their cabin in a bombing raid.

The film is set in the moments before the revolution, during its outbreak and its achievement, the stories shown highlight a good part of the society of the moment, on the one hand the capital with luxurious buildings and casinos, while on the other hand, the problems of people with limited economic resources.

All of the above is a tiny fragment of the lives of those people. The visual tour, of unparalleled aesthetic beauty, is narrated by the female voice-over of revolutionary Cuba itself and the interpreters are accompanied by the Cuban people themselves.
