The story kind of loses me at the end, but it's a great political drama with Catholic high school students as stand-ins. Surprisingly well shot and acted for a low budget movie and a directorial debut. They could have fleshed out the story more and I think they over-do the surrealism a bit, however The Choclate War is a very fun and unique movie filled with the kind of political intrigue that I love, but on a smaller and more personal (and relatable) scale. Watching the interview with the director on the Blu Ray, it's clear that this is largely the tireless work of Cormier and while I think the movie is a success as an art work, it's not surprising that it failed to make back it's budget when he also was in charge of distribution. The Chocolate War is a beautiful movie and I'm glad MVD has resurrected it.
