“do you know how civilizations end? when stupidity is accelerated.”
and that’s kind of the whole film.
the devil, probably is what happens when every system people use to explain life gets tried at full speed politics, therapy, love, religion and still quietly fails without any dramatic collapse. nothing explodes. nobody saves anybody. it just stops working anyway. charles moves through it all like someone running tests on meaning and already knowing none of the results will matter.
bresson doesn’t argue with anything. he just strips the world down until there’s nothing left to defend it. no speeches, no emotional signals telling you what to feel just people talking, acting, existing like they’re slightly out of sync with whatever life was supposed to be.
it’s not loud despair. it’s worse than that. it’s everything looking briefly important then falling back into nothing the moment you hold it too long.
and by the end it doesn’t feel like a conclusion. it feels like the same process still running, just with no one convinced anymore that it leads anywhere.
everything just keeps accelerating.
