🎶 ***My date! With the president’s daughter!
My date! With the president’s daughter!
Oh yeah,
My date! With her!!!! ***🎶
Seriously needed something lighthearted and funny after back-to-back-to-back heavy films lately.
This movie in particular, oft-believed to be a Disney Channel Original Movie, was in fact originally created to air on ABC, and only briefly aired on Disney in the late 90s. Twenty-six years later, it’s nearly become a piece of lost media. It isn’t currently available to stream anywhere, and the only free rips of it online unfortunately suffer from potato picture quality. But thankfully, none of these problems prevented me from having a great time rewatching it — frankly, I was just happy to find it again!
The pure charm of a politically neutral, teen-focused, pre-9/11 presidential story is truly something. I love that this movie made the Secret Service look so hokey, and the White House so easily approachable. It’s genuinely hilarious to reminisce on what a simpler time it was.
Honestly though, the political stuff is just set dressing here, all we really care about are the adorably nerdy Duncan and his date Hallie, who turns out to be the president’s daughter. Truly one of the most iconic couples ever put to film. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the legendary baby pink velvet mini-dress and brown leather blazer these two sport for most of the night — literally every 90s girl’s dream date night ‘fits.
When I first watched this as a child, Hallie’s rebellious antics looked so fun to me, but seeing everything now as an adult really hits different. I just found myself so stressed for her safety the whole time! Like, evade the Secret Service if you must girl, but don’t run off to sketchy bars and link up with random motorcycle-riding creeps! I also found myself fixating on the prices of things all throughout the movie … only $7.99 for new CDs? God, what a time! The $700 price tag on Duncan and Hallie’s groovy new clothes threw me for a complete loop, though. $700 in 1998?! Insanity!
What I thought was the craziest thing about Hallie though, is that she was portrayed as such a wild child First Daughter two entire years before the Bush twins would roll into the White House and employ any tactic they could think of to sneak out and hit the clubs every night of the week! The prescience was almost spooky. Dying to know if they were inspired by this movie!
Amazing nostalgia watch, pure fluffy 90s fun. I can only hope that someone somewhere will one day have mercy on us all and make a remastered HD version available to stream!
