YEAR 1949 TO DATE CHALLENGE: 1970 (German release date I think)
gonna be honest, the 70s is not my favorite period of film history. I think film was going through a revolution where they could finally show nudity! and sex! and have profanity! and blood! but they lost subtlety and confident characters in wake of indulgence.
this one was not my favorite Fassbinder, but I still found it fascinating. However, there was plenty to like. The amount of actors he has staged around the scene was always surprising and kept me interested. They were always dancing or flirting or kissing or drinking or laying or standing motionless and it created a sense of a weird cult-like family that the film crew had become. The characters even say they’re dependent on Jeff for everything.
this is also the HORNIEST movie I’ve ever seen. You see a butt once and a lady all nude once and a woman partially nude once, but the whole thing is rifled with tension and pushing and pulling and switching and jealousy and longing. Definitely one of the more interesting parts.
I guess I didn’t like it all that much because I don’t understand being abusive towards the people that are helping you create your art. Not the kind of environment I’d like to create. I’m also not romantically or physically involved with all the cast and crew which it is implied Fassbinder usually was.
if you want to have a glass of wine and watch people fight over nothing and everything for about 2 hours, this is the movie for you! otherwise, skip!
