Obviously Sean Connery is great, sexy, career-best, iconic, etc, etc but Ian Bannen is delivering one of the most phenomenal performances I’ve ever seen; both totally sympathetic and totally haunting, flitting between the two with ease. Lumet is insane for this, had me absolutely locked in from the opening sequence (now one of my favourite openings ever of all time?). One of the best depictions of obsessive thinking, guilt, and trauma I’ve seen, and portrayed in such an unwaveringly brutal way. Watch this film!
