It’s so weird but this movie perfectly portrayed the fever dream like gloomy state POV of childhood blurring the line between reality and fantasy. It felt nostalgic in the most peculiar way like this is how I saw the world as a child. I have no clue how Rebecca Miller managed to accomplish this but it’s one of the coolest things I’ve experienced from film watching. Mae’s character was portrayed so perfectly in every aspect as a mother struggling with mental illness; constantly disassociating and all the mood changes. I feel so much for her and characters like her. Reminds me so much of the film Wanda. I’ve never personally experienced a mother with mental illness but I have so much empathy for the kids. The girls had the perfect sister dynamic. It was so interesting seeing them interact with each other and the world around them. I love all of the side quest and different people they ran into. The Sweet East was another movie that’s similar to this one. Lillian being older version of Angela. Anglea was so inquisitive, daring, and strong minded while Ellie was innocent and easily impressionable. The dad was reasonably patient much alike Peter Falks character in A Woman Under the Influence. Such a realistic movie that felt incredibly eerie but also kind of ludicrous due to the whimsical score. This paints the duality of childhood: a fun and uncanny world of your own. Although some of the scenes were a bit unorthodox, I admire how bold and unconstrained this whole film was and it had such beautiful aesthetics that emulate older 60s and 70s movies
