Je ne pensais pas rire et pleurer devant un film muet…
3 bad men est une claque cinématographique rarissime. Les plans larges sont magnifiques et spectaculaires quand on voit le nombre de figurants. Les plans serrés aussi, qui nous montres la beauté des visages des acteurs. La musique est sympas. La scène de la course vers l’or exceptionnel et spectaculaire. Et puis la fin est sublime…

3 Bad Men est un film marquant et novateur dans l’histoire du western, notamment par sa mise en scène et son travail du montage. Ford y propose une inversion intéressante des valeurs morales : les bandits deviennent les véritables protagonistes, figures protectrices et sacrificielles, jusqu’à une image finale baignée de nostalgie qui annonce la fin d’un monde.

La scène de la course vers les terres constitue le point culminant du film. Grandiose et inventive, elle participe pleinement à la mythification de la Frontière, mêlant souffle épique et dimension presque documentaire.

Malgré ces qualités évidentes, le film peine toutefois à s’incarner émotionnellement. Le drame reste en surface, certains enjeux étant peu développés, et le jeu conserve par moments une théâtralité marquée. 3 Bad Men apparaît ainsi comme un film important et passionnant à analyser, mais plus stimulant intellectuellement qu’habitant sur le plan émotionnel.

First time seeing a silent film in theater, really special experience

3 Bad Men - The use of the 3 men sacrificing themselves at the end for the main characters was interesting, made you contemplate who was actually considered bad since they weren’t the bad guys. I kind of missed the text at the beginning saying they weren’t actually that bad. Kind of like the end of Harry Potter when they name their child after all three of them which was a little cheesy. Seemed like there was too much importance put on gold even though it was based during the gold rush period. I mean, it seemed like the main goal was to get the gold when the filmmaker wanted it to be having each other and the farm soil of wheat gold. Relationships were also a little confusing throughout and developed way too fast sometimes. Had more of a rom-com cutesie feeling although it was trying to be more of a drama. Also kind of threw away the fact that all 3 men were wanted. Crazy racing scene near the end though I’m not sure how that was filmed without mass chaos but I guess it was.

Didn't find it as engaging as most of Ford's other movies, however it's clear to see that in the nine years between this and his first feature, he picked up a few things making him able to make a slightly more cohesive movie. And as always with early films it's extremely evident how many of the elements will come into play in his later works too, 3 godfathers for example is a vary similar movie.
