New York City's Stonewall Inn is regarded by many as the site of gay and lesbian liberation since it was at this bar that drag queens fought back against police June 27-28, 1969. This documentary uses extensive archival film, movie clips and personal recollections to construct an audiovisual history of the gay community before the Stonewall riots.

i learned a lot. wish intersectionality was touched on a bit longer, but still very informative. think this is something that should be shown in schools </3

it was really lovely spending time with the people recounting their lives, queer life right about the time before queer was a word. and idk if I’ve seen any other media with Native American queer people so it was freakin bae to hear the tales of lesbians beating up homophobic guys and buying every lesbian book that comes out and just personal accounts of life. that said I don’t think they spent enough time with each person for me to properly connect to any of them, it felt like a summary more than a deep dive into peoples lives.
also you can’t discuss queer history and not even mention trans people once, so I think a major drawback of this documentary is pretending to paint a picture of people’s lives and excluding a large portion of your community from the painting.
overall enjoyable, a bit slow but also missing a lot of depth. Some fun moments. This would be a great movie for a middle school class discussing queer history….. but that class doesn’t exist
