one of the greatest and most underrated anti-war films of all time. this movie and ‘All Quiet On The Western Front’ which released 2 years prior largely laid the foundation for what would become anti-war films, with this movie in particular being so realistic and bleak that its said to have driven a french ww1 veteran to suicide after viewing it. its similar to ‘AQOTWF’ yet distinctly unique, i found this movie to focus much more on the gross number of loss during ww1 more so than the futility of war as ‘AQOTWF’ tended to be really centered around, both films i see to be on a relative, mountainous scale. really underrated and so so good.

I appreciated the quieter soldier milieu moments and grimy production design, but the thing still didn’t quite connect with me. It’s not necessarily the film’s fault- I don’t tend to connect with war films, and incessant explosions don’t do it for me. The flash distracted me from the emotional core, and that was probably on purpose. It is what it is. I appreciate it, I just don’t much like it.


PS Upon further discussion I respect the storytelling and pacing more and more so imma bump it up a half star. It’s a good movie! Still could do with fewer ‘splosions.

there is one death scene in this... terrifying. a man’s last wishes of revenge turn to grief which then turn to forgiveness. it’s almost like he wants to hate with the last bit of his life, but he can’t let his legacy go on that way.

beautiful shots. especially when the main guy is visiting the crosses in the makeshift cemetery. also the close ups during the battle sequences were an interesting choice, even more so with the handheld camera.
