First why was everyone so damn hot in here! Even the mother was low-key serving milf. Okay but seriously this is one of the most amazing and delightful romantic comedies I've ever seen, made me realise I really missed the genre a lot. I found one aspect of the film so interesting, Hussein undergoes a transformation to conform to his crush's (Samiha's) expectations. Which is truly a reversal of the tropes because usually it's the other way. Hussein is rather a very boring dowdy character in the beginning. His appearance is unkempt, he has a mustache (behold the real reason why he was unattractive 😅), he never lied and was way too honest! He would call ur food crap if he wanted too. However when he realises Samiha will only fall in love with someone who he isn't, he feels the need to go along with his uncle and Mahrous to fabricate a romance, with none other than the queen herself. The reigning sex symbol of Masri cinema, Hind Rostom! She makes a guest appearance and honestly it is so delightful! Hussein's alleged relationship with Hind, a woman of the world, who men would kill themselves for, creates a scandal in the vibrant metropolitan city of Port Said. However it also unexpected raises his status, as he has an image of being perceived as a player. Hussein is very interesting as he is not a stereotypical male lead, as he is shy and unimposing. The film does explore masculinity and he contrasts many of the other male characters such as his philandering Uncle and later on Hind's fiancee the tough and aggressive also jealous footballer Adel Hekal. I loved the appearance of Hind Rostom, it was genuinely so amazing and a deep dive into the celebrity culture in the 1950s Masri cinema. She is harassed but admirred for her sex appeal. Although she doesn't appear in this that much probably a few 10 minutes, she is amazing and funny as hell. Also I found the generational differences and the appearance of the swinging 60s fascinating in here. The younger kids like Samiha and her male friend Lucy who she initially admires, they are very modern, and westernised, they will dance to typical 60s music and it's a very glamorous image. In general this was a beautifully well made film, the music is so wonderful, charming and romantic at the same time! Whereas like I said I loved the guest appearance of Hind Rostom! Omar Sharif is so utterly amazing, he's very handsome, yet very charming and believable as the character. We see his change and he works so well as the character. Youssef Wahbi was a great supporting character who injected so much comedic timing. Or Ehsan Sherif who played Bahiga, she was amazing! This was my first watch for Soad Hosny and admittedly I am disappointed because of the fact that so few of her films have been made available with English subtitles (anyone? PLS share links or websites!) but she's so adorable and cute and I love her in this! She's so beautiful! And so glamorous but also just so amazing and delightful to watch. Anyways a great film! And I will recommend this to everyone! One of those rom coms that is just amazing and peak level!
