Wanted to love this but…no. Just no. At no point while watching this was I ever sold on it. Just a long slew of cleche plot points, sloppy writing and overdramatized characters. The film follows Just about every cleche and trope in the coming of age genre you can think of. It constantly tries to make you build sympathy for these characters but fails from a lack of any type of heart or originality. It’s very stale and just reheats the same type of stuff we’ve all seen before without even trying to add some interesting flavor to it. Not to mention the three bully characters who are just badly written. This film over exaggerates bullying way too much.
I get there are a lot of people who mercilessly bully people with no warrant like this, but cmon, strapping a 10 year old to a chair and shooting paintball guns at him? Likes that’s pushing it. especially when threre’s absolutely no warrant whatsoever for it. Even when the three bully the other kid who they’ve actually had a history of run ins with, I still feel nothing for the kid because we have almost no context on why they’ve bullied him so much. None of the characters are fleshed out and all of the themes here are handled in a very shallow way. It all just feels like a lazy attempt to make us feel something rather than a sincere one that this filmmaker actually resonates with.
I guess the one saving quality of this movie was that the performance from Charlie Plummer here was pretty heartfelt. Probably the only thing about this movie that didn’t feel phony. The rest of it is just pretty abysmal to say the least.

Charlie Plummer's acting is fire not gonna lie, but the rest of this movie felt very disjointed. The already generic topic that could've been interesting if developed further just didn't resonate with me. And like, what's the obsession with minors being pervs? I think I'm just too Asian to say this but like it was just weird as fuck to watch. And the side characters' development was very weak as well, especially the woman characters.

I am not huge on the coming to age type of movies but this was a little different and I guess more indie. Which it did well for what it’s supposed to be I think. I enjoyed it and thought that it was well made and had some good acting performances. I fucking hated the Shane guy both actor and the character. I just don’t feel like it really went anywhere by the end and like there was no solved solution. Too many loose ends for me. What’s up with Ben’s mom? Why did their dad leave? Is Tom able to pay that guy back? I don’t know maybe the point is to leave with all these questions. Not going to be a favorite of mine but I liked it.
