Anyone who trashed this is just no fun and I won't stand for it.
Sure, it does wander a bit and not everything lands as it should. But I loved the silliness of it all. Part Fellini, part Warhol, part Hawks, full on screwball comedy with insane wardrobes and an even cooler soundtrack, the lush 1930s aesthetic mixed with the street 1980s aesthetic... I just don't see how it could get better than THIS.
And dare I say it? It's definitely better than Purple Rain. Prince had excellent comedic timing and his extravagance wasn't used in that way in Purple Rain, where melodrama and self-imposed seriousness took over the whole tone of the film, thus making it look too poorly acted and over the top in the wrong way. Too burlesque for it to be taken as a dramatic movie. Under The Cherry Moon, on the other hand, allows him to indulge in a more comical side of himself. It's quicker, funnier and over the top in the right way. And over the top is good, if done right and with the right tone.
Kristin Scott Thomas's character has also more depth than Apollonia's and is less victim to sexist prejudices. She's better written and more substantial. It's truly a shame how sexist Purple Rain was, because that ruined the movie for me. But thank you for the music, or something.
