I’ve heard this film be called, “better than The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” and, “the best Western ever made” and, by one loon, “the best film ever made.” I can respect those first two takes but not the last one, I mean there’s even a clearly better 1968 film. That’s besides the point though, the point is this is a great movie. But everything this film does great is done better in the previously mentioned The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. The characters? Not as memorable. The score? Not as good. The final shootout? Ha! Each film tackles different themes and are generally quite different story wise, but Sergio Leone’s masterpiece casts a shadow too large for Once Upon a Time in the West to fill. So why am I comparing them? Because I can’t think of anything else to write except a cheap comparison.
