i don’t care if people say this is paying an homage to silent film or if it’s ridiculing the pretentious appreciation for silent film, the whole silent aspect is just used to cover up bad acting and to make it easier to film and edit. and this film had background audience sound which misses the whole point of what makes silent film successful in evoking emotion in its core: the score. although these aren’t the reasons that i don’t like this film, it’s something to point out when talking about its filmmaking.
dealing with different forms of abuse, this film makes a great point (sometimes) about the neglected, not really giving any reason but the thrill of getting away with it and seeing how far it could go. primarily focusing on men implementing the abuse (although there is one abusive woman), it becomes a great topic of subject about the majority. sadly, it’s such a ground level explanation of things rather than using each story of the anthology to consider the psychology behind it all.
but what makes me dislike this movie is how they decide to portray the characters’ beknownst neglect. the use of distasteful crude humor being paired along with the full frontal nudity, doesn’t seem like it’s giving any emphasis on the subject matter. rather it feels like it’s used to satisfy a need or a want. and working along with the poor execution of silent film, this isn’t a good or even deeply insightful film.
