watched for class.
Fatima’s household is only one in title. all three of those that lived there spend more time outside of its walls than within, with Nesrine moved for university, Souad at school and with her friends in the streets, and Fatima working long hours. they all have individual plans and schedules, the result of tirelessly carving out the life they had each imagined when moving to France. but all roads, even those foreign, eventually lead home. Fatima’s divorced husband still checks in on Nesrines and Souad, Fatima and Souad clash at home, and Nesrine welcomes Fatima to her new apartment bringing food and comfort. distance and strange customs cannot shake what lies at the center of each family member's life: each other.
and some people in class were talking about the ending, but i thought ending of the movie was a good place to leave it, as it gave Nesrine and her family a concrete victory to move forward along. throughout the movie, Fatima, Nesrine, and Souad are always struggling to hold onto their place in France, working long hours and selling jewelry to make rent, studying tirelessly to make sure she could stay in school. but like Fatima’s husband helped build some of the structures in France, Nesrine’s accomplishment is something earned, something concrete that nobody can take away from them. it cements her, and by extension her family’s, place in France as people with roots and responsibilities that finally tether them to a once foreign land.
