Young Bart Collins lives with his widowed mother Heloise. The major blight on Bart's existence is the hated piano lessons he is forced to endure under the tutelage of the autocratic Dr. Terwilliker. Bart feels that his mother has fallen under Terwilliker's sinister influence, and gripes to visiting plumber August Zabladowski, without much result. While grimly hammering away at his lessons, Bart dozes off and enters a fantastical musical dream.

Polish-American everyman war hero topples authoritarian piano teacher. Headline reads:
Zabladowski Sinks Terwilliker
Plumber's story strikes chords with the hearts of America

It’s very fun seeing a movie that loves being a musical but has to contend with the fact that the story is about a boy who doesn’t want to play music. The sets are fantastic and the clear influence from European film makes for a world that is worth exploring. I do feel that if in the end he learned to enjoy piano in his own way that it would have become a stronger film overall, but I guess we can’t have everything

This tickled everything I love about a good live action children’s movie incredible to see a dr Seuss film with sets that really feel like it. And holy shit they don’t dance like that anymore. Gasped when Mary Healy was running away and that coat and brown dress fluttered together
