A political satire that somehow manages to be relevant and so super specific to the time it was made. Capra's status as a Republican who was vehemently against the New Deal has been a thorn in my side the entire time I've been going through his cinema, especially as the politics of his greatest works feel so progressive in today's environment. I think this picture possibly captures Capra's political stance the best, even if it still confounds me of the anti-Roosevelt of it all, and really brings forward the common thread of so much of his work: his despising of corruption.
Though, I'd still vote for Harry Truman.
Tracy and Hepbrun are wonderful as ever, even if the dynamic is a bit different than usual. Also with easily hateable characters from Angela Lansbury and Adolphe Menjou, along with an actually decent use of Van Johnson!
