What a strange film, honestly would classify this as horror easily as it's sort of a meeting between fairy tales and horror- just mix that with erotic themes (basically a dark horny take on Hansel and Gretel). The moral code at the end is totally invalid here which I think is the point? Maybe to add more to the uncomfortableness of the film but the intention of the film maker here is confusing. Very much a complex film that I think is about exploring the conflicted natures of humans and it does a decent job at it. The cinematography is subdued and stylish, the characters were interesting atleast but the things that happen kinda felt like there were there just to add controversy and would've love more if it had an actual explanation and valid depth behind it. I like how unusual and unique it was though, you certainly wouldn't see a movie like this in America.

CRIMINAL LOVERS induces delirium through it's murderous retelling of Hansel and Gretel by amalgamating sadism, cannibalism, and homoeroticism. The brutal murder of Said, at first, seemed like the psychotic whim of a white girl able to manipulate her lover simply by flashing her tits. However, once the second half rolls out, Ozon cheekily implants subtext that Luc is perhaps closeted and desires Said too. The girl's lust for murder coincides with her boyfriend's latent homoerotic desires. After escaping the shack, it becomes apparent that they've overcome their desires that were inadvertently projected onto Said's character. The participation of wild animals in by the river, missionary sex feels like a perverse ode to Snow White, as well.
