I get that it's based on an autobiography, so I'm not sure how much is real and how much is for the movie, but King of the Hill feels way too sanitized and schmaltzy. I kept waiting for something to happen that would kick the movie into the next gear, but everything feels more like a storybook than a Great Depression saga. There were so many obvious setups that fall flat. It's a well made movie with solid pacing and performances, but it plays out like a series of loosely related vignettes. There is so much missing between that it becomes disjointed and hard to follow. We drop most storylines as soon as they start and the ones that we do continue, feel more like a Disney movie that a raw story. Again, maybe this is exactly how it all played out in real life, but it seems to me like we're seeing the whole thing through rose colored glasses.
