well good thing this was censored because there is probably a total of 40-45 mins of sex scenes and torture porn. i was very sick with a bad headache when watching this and i sat through 20 mins straight of intense sexual assault. throughout the entire movie, it can’t go 10 mins without a scene like that. for a film inspired by the events of the colleen stan case, this film carries no justice or awareness instead it uses the case as a prop to fill into sadistic desires.
the film weakly explores the psychologically damaged aftermaths to make up for all of the torture but they “double down” on the male gaze towards the end which feels like forever tbh. there are some interesting themes about the justice system and the public being underwhelmingly empathetic towards victims of sexual abuse. as well as the shocking commonalities of sadism and misogyny between a wide range of men especially in japan.
but you can’t call this film poetic or eye-opening just because she’s in a box looking at the ocean for 6 mins and expect it to outweigh the clearly sexist shit. i know if i’m not into this stuff i shouldn’t be watching it but i’m a curious person when it comes to having an inside opinion.
