genuinely such a roller coaster, kinda picked it out of impulse, just to knock some things off my watchlist and i end up finding the beginnings of a legend, working with a legend to direct, and just a legendary supporting cast.
anthony hopkins is that MF!!! learning ventriloquism for this role is insane!! you can see from where hannibal lecter (or at least the choice for him to play that character)’s likeliness originated. a talented comedian/magician with an untreated mental illness trying to impress a high school sweetheart who is literally willing to leave her husband for him??!! come on!!! AND THAT ENDING GUTTED ME!!!! genuinely unreal. his deterioration is off the charts. i need to be him.
ann-margaret and burgess meredith are absolute forces here, even with their limited screen time. their respective scenes always kept me engaged. the scene where corky shows peggy his trick and they finally pull the same card was TENSE!!! he can sweat like crazy lmaooo. and when he has to make “fats” shut up for 5 minutes, i also felt like time was either going too slow or too fast. brilliant the way hopkins and each of these scene partners can just grab you and keep you there!!
and i loved that stupid puppet, it’s perfectly designed and it didn’t feel corny or cringy. the puppet literally felt like a completely different character. even when the puppet himself ended up becoming the puppet master and controlling corky (even though we know it was him all along) (that final line gets meeeee), it was brilliant. absolutely brilliant.
duke can lowkey fuck off and die
