Hard to hate Key and Peele, but this is easily one of their weaker efforts. Their charm is strong, but these are some weak ass jokes. I certainly laughed quite a bit, especially in the middle, but it's hard to deny how spotty this movie is, even in the second act, which is the strongest and where the repeated jokes are still funny.
Mainstream comedies trying to do anything with their characters more than always fail because not enough weight is given to their arcs, and most of the time they are half-assed, so I'm thinking, why even bother trying? While it can be funny, just like most sketch comics, they're stronger in short, contained bursts, and whenever this movie isn't trying to tell a joke, it is painfully generic and bland to look at.
It's really hard to laugh at the same joke over and over after a certain point, and after the Anna Faris showdown, it really falls apart and becomes something truly awful and unfunny. The score is so confusing on whether it wants to be ironic or if it's just unaware of how terrible it is. Some setups work, while others really don't, and a lot of them are painfully obvious and tedious, but I didn't regret watching it. The experience as a whole is like eating a decent sandwich over and over. After a while, it's not hitting the same way and the things you liked before will have a lesser effect.
