Lots of interesting ideas that appeal to me, but the script doesn't always work for me. But all the acting is well done, and the whole movie is just a vibe that I just really enjoy even if the plot doesn't land properly. It may improve on a rewatch. I wish Hoagy Carmichael was in more movies, he's my favorite part in everything I've seen him in.

I love a movie about music and musicians and I enjoyed this very much. The relationship between Kirk Douglas and Juano Hernandez was probably my favorite part of it. Sadly, I didn’t like very much the Douglas x Bacall couple. I didn’t think they had much chemistry but maybe that was the point. They were toxic together. Lauren Bacall’s character was very fascinating though, even if she didn’t have an ounce of empathy. And Kirk Douglas was also a little bit self absorbed, something that it seemed to be a common denominator in movies about musicians, just like 1946’s Humoresque. Over all, it was a good movie, but I did get a little bit bored once the first half ended.

There were a couple of shots that reminded me so much of La La Land. And the story is sort of a combo of Whiplash and Inside Llewelen Davis.  Good stuff.

Doris Day and Juano Hernandez are the best here imo. Day does a fantastic job playing the loyal, good friend and adds enough humanity to the role that it doesn’t seem superficial. Hernandez makes a role that coulda been one note dynamic by making the character all knowing yet not capable of achieving anything. It’s cool.
