It's kinda like Fargo without the comedy, but really the criminal bungling on display here is still pretty funny, even if it's played straight. A clear influence on those silly Coen boys.

Jacques Tourneur might be one of the more underrated directors of the 40s-50s. While the only other film of his I’ve seen is Cat People (1942), both films reeled me in within the first 5 minutes and by the average rating for the rest of his films, I don’t think it’s too soon to praise him. Nightfall is such a fun time and an overall great noir. Glad I caught it before it left the Criterion Channel.
