It’s funny to watch this right after Wizard of Oz because this movie also has a fantastical element but on an entirely different backdrop. Everything sucks except the joy they create together and all the magic solutions to real problems come with a nasty twist.

The atmosphere is really creepy and there’s some really high impact moments, but I think some combination of language barrier and child acting kept me from falling into this one.

This film wants to blend fairy tale and horror, but I feel like it really misses the mark. It lingers between allegory and realism. Not really committing to either.

Visually it's pretty nice though.
