remember when movies were awesome? literally every time i watch a golden age musical i am convinced that modern cinema is dead. now, is this the best musical from that time? no, definitely not. there’s something about this that is a little disconnected in comparison to other films from the time. it could be the very outdated weird setting of colonial settlement in the caribbean, or it’s weird ass love story, or the very blatantly plagiarized version of “make ‘em laugh;” there’s a lot at play here. but this movie more than makes up for those short coming with insane comedy and unbridled sex appeal. judy garland and gene kelly are a comedy duo for the ages! the scene of them throwing the glass is maybe one of the funniest things i’ve ever seen. but even more subtle moments in the film are just as impactful. on top of that gene kelly is up to his usual bullshit, which i have no complaints about. this film’s random gene kelly dance break included booty shorts, pyrotechnics like you would not believe, and an ass that won’t quit. definitely worth watching for those who love golden age musicals and shenanigans!
