It’s 1948 and the Cold War has arrived in Chile. In the Congress, prominent Communist Senator and popular poet Pablo Neruda accuses the government of betraying the Party and is stripped of his parliamentary immunity by President González Videla. The Chief of Investigative Police instructs inspector Óscar Peluchonneau to arrest the poet. Neruda tries to escape from the country with his wife, the painter Delia del Carril, but they are forced to go underground.

Being unaware of Pablo Neruda—besides a random Simpsons reference—truly enhanced the viewing experience. Not knowing his fate beforehand added an extra layer of tension, a layer of intrigue you’re sometimes devoid of when the biopic revolves around a figure you’ve studied. 

After seeing a film like this, wrapped in a sea of deep political and social themes, you’re bound to develop lots of insightful takeaways from it. Unfortunately, I was too distracted by how beautiful Gael Garcia Bernal looks with a mustache.

Larrain ancora una volta rinnova la formula del biopic, dirigendo una storia con al centro un personaggio reale e una storia reale, ma trattandola come un genere, qui il poliziesco classico.

Il tutto come al solito è condito dalla sua ossessione per la luce e per l'irregolarità, che personalmente adoro.

Forse non il miglior Larrain ma comunque un gran film.
Larrain ancora una volta rinnova la formula del biopic, dirigendo una storia con al centro un personaggio reale e una storia reale, ma trattandola come un genere, qui il poliziesco classico.

Il tutto come al solito è condito dalla sua ossessione per la luce e per l'irregolarità, che personalmente adoro.

Forse non il miglior Larrain ma comunque un gran film.
