bold, ballsy cinema. not only is it a satirical showcase of socialist romania's inherent authoritarianism, but this film directly proves its nation's hyprocisy by the reveal of its very subsequent, real-life ban. when film has this many layers, every peel is excruciating yet equally rewarding when digested and combated. a critique of barbarism? a critique of ones own nation? a critique of alcoholism? who cares, when innocent lives are lost in the process in the hands of malice.
