It’s kind of crazy how boring a martial arts action-comedy can be when the action is void of any comedy. As much as I hate to say it, it’s difficult for a film with such a modest budget to successfully produce emotional scenes without a little bit of artistry. This film has the foundation of a comedy (especially with the way it’s widely shot,) yet doesn’t attempt to charm in the way that makes these films so great to begin with. Not to mention, the massive cast of characters all feel flat, and the story basically plateaus from around ten minutes in.
I gotta give it to them, though, Hong Kong had some spectacular athletes in the 70s and 80s. This isn’t horrible, but completely pales in comparison with the rest of Chan’s films that I’ve seen.
