One of the most excessively extravagant, self-aggrandizing and masturbatory works by an auteur in film history, AND. IT. IS. FASCINATING. I say that a bit cheekily because there is a level of self-awareness apparent here, but this film is absolute von Stroheim, von Stroheim, von Stroheim all along the way!

While Foolish Wives mightn’t have engaged me quite in the way it was supposed to, it is without a doubt a film that was truly ahead of its time. 

With its captivating performances and strong narrative plot, only the lack of sound is a giveaway to the film’s 100 years of age. 

It’s generally an incredibly well made film in terms of its cinematography and camera work. Erich von Stroheim is undoubtedly both a talented director and actor. 

I do though believe that the film deserves another viewing from me as I’m not quite sure wether got all that it has to offer.
