a decent adaption of one of my favorite books with some of my favorite stars and plenty of questionable aussie accents. loved seeing astaire in a serious role, hated the random spanking??

A mediocre adaptation of the original 1957 novel. A difficult task considering the original is one of the best books I’ve ever read. The supporting characters don’t really have much development and the changes made from the original are quite baffling. The ending is quite toned down as well which was quite disappointing. Peter and Mary’s final moments are much less tragic in the film and it felt like they had barely any screen time.  However, this version does have many good moments. It is more enjoyable if you forget about the much better original.

I imagine this was a hard watch around the time it came out, but falls into the category of films that seem a little mild in comparison to the kind of stuff we are seeing these days. Still some great moments tho.
