“ ‘Any fulfillment obtained at the expense of normality is wrong and should not be allowed to bring happiness. In short, it's better because it's morally honorable for the square peg to keep scrapin' about in a round hole rather than to discover and use the unorthodox one that would fit it.’
‘That’s right, so you agree with me?’
‘No. No I don’t.’ “
Oh thank GOD there is a film adaptation of a Carson McCullers novel that is enjoyable AND honors the source text 😭
I am astounded that warner brothers distributed a movie with such clear queer characters and themes in the year of 1967. Marlon Brando playing a military general who is bewitched by the man who is bewitched by his wife, Elizabeth Taylor was so cool to watch unfold on screen.
Reflections in a Golden Eye was Carson McCullers’ sophomore novel. Whereas her debut novel, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, took characters from different marginalized groups, compared their lives all together, and had big things to say about the broader society, this novel is a much more intimate look at the lives of these handful of characters, their passions, how women can express them versus how men can… what happens when men repress their feelings so long until they explode. It’s an examination of desire.
While the script still ended up watering down some important pieces of the characters lives, it didn’t shy away from the “nudity from behind” shots or that Marlon’s character and Anicleto were queer, and for that I must applaud.
Cinematically, there are some really cool experimental shots here as well. Brando and Taylor give great performances as expected. I am so happy that I liked this movie because the other adaptation of McCullers’ work have been bad haha
