From a structural standpoint, this documentary is pretty generic. Luckily, it makes up for those shortcomings by focusing on one of the most fascinating and brilliant writers to ever do it.
As a journalist, would-be author, once-and-future filmmaker and woman, I have no choice but to worship at the altar of Nora Ephron. Her razor-sharp observations and fearless wit are what I’ve tried to model my own work (and personality) on since I first saw When Harry Met Sally over a decade ago. Even the way she writes about writing, calling herself a “wallflower at the orgy,” makes me feel so seen.
Outside of her work, Nora was also living life the way it was meant to be lived: in a way where all of her friends and family members talk with the deepest love and admiration about what a bitch she was.
Any crumb of a glimpse into her mind is a worthwhile viewing experience and that’s why I’ve seen this documentary like four times. I come back to this film for the same reason Catholics go to Mass every Sunday: to feel closer to God.
