"At first it is horrible. But then you start to think about starving kids, little girls sold into slavery, women whose sex is sewn up... God created murder out of pure kindness. Murder is nothing compared to those horrors."
the fact that it was made to force us to sympathise with lucien even though his actions might have been the worst sin to commit, and it pulled the audience into the world of nihilism on his side. all the while maintaining comedic undertones, i love it. kind of in awe of this film because it's been a while since i've seen something like this and i throughly enjoyed it. i loved the ending so much and i thought it was extremely well done. the precedence is set very clearly and as time went on i sank myself into the plot. before i knew it he was already committing the acts.
it's just so nuanced and layered and i love so many aspects of this. nihilism being the most part. it was not exactly clear in the first half but as the third act proceeded, i truly understood where this film was going and enjoyed it so much. the comedy was truly coming through because i did laugh many times and i thought everything was so smart. i liked the progression and subtlety of it all, and also the quotes, so many beautiful quotes i will think about for a long long time now. loved the colour too, such a delight to witness. extremely powerful opening and ending scenes
"They say there's only one death but a hundred ways of dying."
