Being a tomboy was never in the cards for me. I was a “pink bedroom, ballet dancer, makeup tutorial” girly girl — and while some faced pressure to perform their femininity, I felt freedom in it. The Fits is a film that reveals itself to you; frightened, then curious along with our protagonist Toni. Boil evolving desires for authentic self-expression and intimacy of feminine community, to pour on a preteen’s excitement and fears of an unavoidable world to be perceived.
The fears are honest, sensible…but so often, I find stories like this to center those fears. Seldomly, do I see the celebration of passing through girlhood. Everyone’s experience varies yet simply proximity of sisterhood, is where they find exhilaration, then bittersweet catharsis. A beautiful story one could take many different things away from…this was mine.

Seemed very promising at first. It felt personal and subjective, I was easily immersed at the start. But by then end of the story, not much had really happened. Just a small sequence of events with no dynamic plot.
