The Passion of Martin
Wow! This was Payne’s thesis student film and it’s really incredibly to see many of the tropes and techniques he would come to perfected feature in his future work, present here. This is honestly a great thesis for his whole filmography which is just stunning. Lacks the subtlety present in his features but I had too much fun laughing at this pathetic guy, hell bent on self destruction (borderline sociopath in this one), not to have a great time. And that’s why Payne films are all about.

What no pussy does to a mf.

Interesting to see a Payne character that is so much different from all of his other protagonists. You’ll never guess what the photo on the poster is of him doing.

Alexander Payne is one of the most gifted filmmakers the industry has ever seen. How is this a student film?

The Passion of Martin might be my favorite of his projects. So forward thinking and superb in terms of editing.

I saw this as a supplement on the criterion disc of Election. Potentially the most inspiring film I’ve ever seen. The stuff that makes you want to write your own movies.
