1989 | The Howling | Werewolves
"Howling V: The Rebirth" is better than its predecessor, but still a bad film.
The premise of a random group of people exploring an old Hungarian castle sounds interesting at first, but I didn't know in advance how it would work for a werewolf film and now I know it doesn't. More is going on than in the previous film, but still not much and the film is actually not as boring as its predecessor, but it is still fairly boring. The characters just walk around this castle the whole time and do almost nothing. In addition, the characters are simply uninteresting and weakly written and behave incredibly stupid and acting and dubbing are about as bad as in the previous one. The plot is stupid and runs completely unspectacular, uninteresting and without highlights.
I already complained that in "Howling IV: The Original Nightmare" there were werewolves and effects only in the last 10 minutes, but both are even more absent here. As far as I can remember, there is no full werewolf, there is no transformation scene and in general you don't get to see much more than silhouettes and flashes, which is very unsatisfactory because not even the finale has anything to offer. In the previous one we at least had about 10 minutes of werewolf, here it's maybe 2. What you have to credit the film is that the castle creates a little atmosphere, but that is because of the castle itself and not the direction or something. I also kinda disliked the score in this one.
