while this is definitely a slow burn and takes 40 minutes for anything to really happen, those last 30 minutes really make up for it. japanese horror will always be superior to american horror, and this movie just really showed me why i think that. this movie has some of the best, most realistic practical effects i’ve probably ever seen. scenes of self-cannibalisation, when a woman eats her own vagina, are both well-done and disturbing. it is a great body-horror that has intense surrealism, which makes it exciting and the dream-like quality really makes the horror more effective. it also doesn’t just feel like gore for the sake of gore (which definitely isn’t bad) but it actually has some interesting messages such as addiction and the blurring of pain and pleasure. a really swift watch of only 73 minutes, and a must watch for those interested in extreme japanese cinema
