Anurag Kashyap is a genius.
Loved the metaphor and satire spread throughout the entire film. The 1st half is fantastic, fully enjoyed every bit of it, including the sprinkled comedy which lands really well. Somewhere in the initial part of the 2nd half the film lost me a little, feeling confusing and illogical at points. But by the time it ends and everything comes together, it slowly starts hitting you and making sense in your head. Really needed a moment to sit and think after it ended, which is a compliment.
A 2007 film like this was truly ahead of its time. I barely remember Bollywood making films like these, it is rare, very rare.
The performances are crazy good. John Abraham is brilliant as the classic toxic man, I genuinely started hating his character, which is exactly what the role needed. Paresh Rawal is as legendary as always, delivering a thoroughly convincing performance. Ayesha Takia is decently good here too, and Ranvir Shorey is great in his limited screen time. Also loved spotting Vikramaditya Motwane, Kiku Sharda and Rasika Dugal all in their younger days. And that special cameo in the elevator scene was a lovely touch.
I went in expecting something realistic and dramatic like most Anurag Kashyap films, but was positively surprised by the unique story and staging. It almost did not feel like his film at first given the psychological themes. Really great piece of storytelling and satire.
