this had so much potential at the start. but the forced love story? completely diminishes the plot development

a typical monstress comes of age with an unnecessary attempted rape scene. like i'm being so serious. wtf is up with movies just having unnecessary rape scenes? it's like reinforcing those scholars cited in rape revenge films: a critical study who said that sexual violence is an essential part of the formation of female gender. which is entirely false for a variety of reasons (and also excludes whole demographics of survivors and victims). i bring this up because it's clear that the attempted rape is supposed to align with the monstress comes of age storyline. but you can do a monstress comes of age narrative without sexual violence.

Hooptober Se7en, Entry #5 (Bonus Watch/Not Categorized)

In this Ginger Snaps-lite, Bel Powley and Brad Dourif deliver some good performances, between Dourif turning a surprisingly tender performance when another actor would emphasize the creep factor, and Powley's wide-eyed innocence in her performance, the leads are nothing to complain about.... However the film does suffer from slow pacing, not knowing if it wants to focus on the physical changes or rehabilitation elements, and instead awkwardly juggling until it drops the ball on both elements. I feel like with more money and a few more script drafts, this definitely could have been great, however.

A gorgeous, chilling, and metaphorically biting revamp for the werewolf subgenre. Bel Powley is truly a gift.
