An all around unfortunate and disappointing third entry to an action series I thought had the potential for consistency comparable to the John Wick movies, Ip Man 3 falls short of its predecessors in almost every way through a very noticeably downtick in script quality, rougher edits around the action sequences, and a story that felt like it was trying to offer and do way too much. Compared to the way the first two entries found such success in their contained settings and stories that last fact may hurt it the most for me, I’d be able to get past some of the other things for reasons I’ll talk about but the discombobulated tone really left me the most disappointed. The writing, although a step down like I said, did leave me a little torn on how I felt, on one hand I thought the emotional scenes between Ip Man and his wife were written nicely but the scene-to-scene dialogue and conversations during action scenes all felt a bit artificial which is a problem I haven’t had with this series so far. The cast is still a lot of fun with Donnie Yen being as good as ever and Lynn Hung giving what I thought was her best work of the series so far, I also liked Zhang Jin’s character and even though Mike Tyson felt so out of place here and certainly isn’t a good actor I can’t say I didn’t smile whenever he was on screen. It definitely disappoints like I said but in the end I did have a decent time, despite the regressed action there were definitely some highlights to enjoy and the cast, despite the mediocre script, did the best they could, and with the good cinematography and score it gets a high 3 from me with some potential to jump if I rewatch this series some day and love it more than I already do.
