Simultaneously better and worse than I remember it.
It’s got big set pieces and yet feels somehow so dry and dumb. The Brosnan era had so much promise after Goldeneye but ultimately the subsequent scripts fall flat. It’s a step forward for the franchise but not far enough.
Denise Richards is famously horrible in this, but Sophie Morceau isn’t much better. While she’s a great actress, the character fails to land whatsoever.
It’s hard to deny the scale of what they were trying to accomplish, yet bad production design shines through occasionally. The scene after the pipe explosion looks straight out of a b movie, with pieces of shrapnel and tree branches placed evenly apart.
An interesting entry in the franchise, and one where you feel they’re learning from some but not all of their past mistakes.
